Oliver is an elegant tuxedo cat, who is full of himself. As a matter of fact he says “I love myself!”, quite often. Naughty, isn’t he? But his best friend Jumpy, a kangaroo lady, is aware that he has a soft heart and will always want to help others. The great thing is Jumpy’s pouch, which Oliver loves to ride in! He calls her his kangaroo taxi! These little bedtime stories with their lovely illustrations are great for small kids. A parent can read the text and tell the child in his own words. These animal stories have sufficient text to keep early readers happy and provide some educational value. Love you all! Meow!

Ice - Joey goes ice skating but can't stop. He ends up on an ice floe with an angry polar bear. The whale helps him.
Dragon Heat - The dragon devastates the land and the giant teaches him a lesson.
Wet Cat - Oliver falls into the sea from an excursion boat and is rescued by dolphins.

Oliver and Jumpy Volume 16 edition by Werner Stejskal Children eBooks

In this Oliver and Jumpy collection readers are treated to three separate stories:

1. Saving Fairyland
2. Cat King
3. The Bee Gnomes

As with previous Oliver and Jumpy books, the author gives readers a brief intro into the lives of his two major characters. Readers learn that Oliver and Jumpy are a tomcat and a kangaroo who are best friends. Oliver is a very famous cat who lives in a tree house in a mighty oak tree. The friends get into all sorts of exciting adventures together. The stories are told from Oliver’s point of view.

The stories in this book are somewhat involved and lengthy. Since this book is recommended for children ages 5 – 7, parents should be aware that they’ll probably need to explain several of the words within these stories. Words like “immobilize”, “ruse”, “implement” and “demise” just aren’t in a young child’s vocabulary. However, as I said in a previous review of another of Mr. Stejskal’s books, this certainly opens the door to discussions between parents and children. It’s also a good opportunity for vocabulary building. Additionally, young children should have no problem staying involved with the action-packed plots and accompanying illustrations.

I also feel this book makes an excellent graphic novel for older children. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and vibrantly colorful. Graphic novels are extremely popular among elementary age (and even older) children and the author could easily market this book toward this age level as well.

I’d recommend the Oliver and Jumpy series to readers. They’re full of adventure, action and attention-getting illustrations!

Oliver and Jumpy Stories 46-48
by Werner Stejskal
Illustrations by Maycee Ann Reyes

Fans of Oliver, a most elegant cat, and his friend Jumpy, a kangaroo, will love the three stories in this book. Newcomers to this amazing cat and his adventures will want to read all the books in this series.

Story 46 Saving Fairyland

Oliver is having his dinner of crunchies and milk(lactose free, of course) when a noise makes him turn--a lovely fairy, Queen of the Fairies no less, is standing next to him, looking sad. She's come to ask for his help. A magician near Fairyland is trying to steal their land. And he has a Giant to help him!! Oliver doesn't stop to think what a big job this is for a small cat and his friends. Off they go to help save what's left of Fairyland, and try to stop the Giant's destruction of their crops. Oliver has no fairy magic but he does have brains. Kids, can you imagine what Oliver has in mind to stop the mean Giant before it's too late?

Story 47 Cat King

Oliver, Jumpy and her son, Joey love to explore Ghost Castle even though it always holds a different adventure. Nothing was ever as surprising as finding a huge statue of himself and smaller ones lined up along the long hall. Suddenly the small cat statues come to life and bow down to Oliver. Well! That never happened before. They call him King and Oliver, mischievous cat, decides to play along and act as their King. He even meets a lovely cat who wants to be his Queen. Sigh . . .
Something unusual happens that teaches Oliver that it's not nice to fool people.

Story 48 The Bee Gnomes

All you young readers know that Oliver is elegant. He has told us many times. Yet sometimes, not often of course, some mean visitors tell him that he is a messy cat! Amazing right? How can this be? Actually, like some of us, his tree house gets a little--well okay--a lot messy. One such time every morning he awakens to a perfectly clean house. He stays up all night hoping to catch whoever is cleaning his house. You just can't imagine what he finds and why they are cleaning his house.

Author Werner Stejskal has written an outstanding children's series and this set is no different. His stories entertain, have laugh out loud moments and always teach children a life lesson as well as a love of reading.

More adventures for Oliver and his friends. In the first story, Oliver is approached by his friend the Fairy Queen. She's beautiful and lives in a glass castle, but her kingdom is threatened by a wicked magician. Oliver promises to help and brings along his gal-pal Jumpy and her son Joey. AND they have extra help in the form of Olly the Owl and Mausi the Mouse. They'll need the strength of numbers because the evil magician has a crop-stomping giant and an army of demons and a fire-breathing dragon. With teamwork, strategy, and a bit of magic, Oliver and his friends save Fairyland.

The second story is another trip to Ghost Castle, where interesting things are always happening. This time, it's just Oliver, Jumpy, and Joey who discover an ancient temple dedicated to the Cat King. And the giant statue is the spitting image of you-know-who. For a while "King Oliver" enjoys a blissful reign - complete with beautiful bride, luxurious accommodations, and adoring worshipers. But a freak accident changes his appearance and his loyal subjects give him the Order of the Boot. You know the old saying, "Beauty is only fur-deep!"

The last story is a mystery, with someone coming in every night to clean up Oliver's messy tree house. Some of Oliver's neighbors have been left homeless by deforestation and need to move in with him. Fortunately, there's plenty of room for everyone in Oliver's mighty tree. It's a lesson in the importance of saving wildlife habitat and in having friends. Now if those Bee Gnomes would only clean MY house.

Great stories, lovely illustrations, and lots to talk about and think about. What more could you ask for?
